Collective Threatening
The idea behind unions around the world is Collective Bargaining wherein they take advantage of the power of group to get better benefits for the members of the group. Trade unions in Kerala have a different approach to this. What they do is Collective Threatening the idea behind this is that you make a group big and strong enough to subdue your enemy and hold them hostage. The latest example in this cases is Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti's protest against the entry of retail chains in Kerala.
For quite while they had Kerala consumers as captives for their lack of choice. Now all of a sudden they feel threatened by the retail chains who provide one stop shopping, better service, quality products and maybe better price for the consumers. So what do our Vyaparis do? Instead of making their service better they try to protest against the entry of the chains when their protest went unanswered they start threatening.
T. Nazarudheen, president of the samiti, told The Hindu that so far the agitation against the retail chains, spearheaded by the samiti, had been peaceful. But, from next month it would turn violent.
“We will break their shops,” he warned. Those renting shopping space to these chains would also face the same fate. He said that nearly a quarter of the shopkeepers in the State were young men and women and that their ire against the retail chains could not be kept under leash for long.
Way to guys!!
